How To Clean Your Hot Tub Cover – 5 Simple Steps

OUR HOT TUB BLOG

Hot tub covers work hard for you and your spa. Not only do they protect your hot tub from Mother Nature, but they can also add years to its lifespan, ensuring you get the most out of your investment.

They also act as a safety feature by keeping children and pets out of the water while also making your hot tub more energy-efficient — and that means lower utility bills.

If that isn’t enough, your cover is also one of the best ways to keep your spa’s water clean. It prevents dirt and debris from falling into your spa, making routine chemical checks and maintenance a whole lot easier.

With all that your hot tub cover accomplishes for you, keeping it clean and well-maintained is a no-brainer. To help you do just that, we have broken down routine maintenance into five easy steps that will keep your cover in good condition.

1. Remove the Hot Tub Cover

Take the cover off your hot tub and set it on a soft, flat surface like your lawn. If possible, place it near a hose or other water source. This will make the cleaning process much easier.

2. Hose it Down

Spray the underside of the cover with a hose to rid it of any hot tub chemicals that may have splashed on it. Once it dries, turn it over and spray the other side free of dirt and debris.

One thing we can’t stress enough is using your hose with a moderate nozzle setting. You should also avoid using a power washer. Keeping the water pressure regulated will ensure the cover isn’t damaged.

3. Get Cleaning

While the underside of the cover needs only a gentle rinse, the top is a different story. It will need a good cleaning to get rid of grime caused by precipitation, insects, birds, and falling leaves and twigs.

Choose a vinyl cleaner recommended by the hot tub cover manufacturer or your hot tub dealer. Spray the entire surface of the cover with the cleaner.

In a pinch, a vinegar and water solution can be used, but household cleaners are a major no-no.

Bleach, alcohol, and detergents tend to be too harsh and could eat into your cover’s UV protectant.

Once the surface is covered with an appropriate cleaner, use small circular motions to lightly scrub the surface. We recommend using a cloth or a soft-bristled brush to get the job done.

4. Give it a Rinse

Once your cover is clean, hose it free of the cleaner and then wipe it down with a soft rag or towel. Allow it to dry completely before beginning the next step.

Simply lean the cover-up against a nearby fence, gazebo, or the hot tub itself.

5. UV Protection

If you don’t have a cover cap, it’s important to use a UV vinyl protector. Spray the entire surface of the cover and allow it to dry before reattaching the cover to your hot tub.

Using a protector every three months will keep your cover supple. Untreated, the sun’s rays can cause drying or cracking.

By following these five simple steps, you can keep your hot tub cover in tip-top shape for many years to come.
